What's the word I'm thinking of?

It's a word used when a religious prophet or someone of that sort has a vision or an epiphany and writes down a new revelation or law or something. Not chronicle, but a word that implies much more dedication to detail to ensure it's accurate. I have a feeling it begins with "e" or "ex" but I can't think of the word and it's driving me insane!
