Mandatory sentencing - have pollies lost the plot?

Ranjeeh, the officers you mention, are doing a job, enforcing laws of the province/state and or country. It's a damn job, why should these guys have to lose their lives, to make the betterment of society safer. It's never been said that your life or my life is worth any less. Just they are in the line of fire as you would put it.
